Storage Unit Cleanouts in Duluth

A storage unit costs money every month whether you open it or not. We clear out the items you are done with, set aside what you want to keep, and leave the unit swept and empty so you can close the rental and stop the bill.

When clearing the unit makes more sense than renewing it

Most units are rented for a short move or a remodel, then stay rented for years. Run the numbers on what is inside. A dresser or a set of boxed dishes that would cost little to replace can easily be outpaid by a year or two of rent. Once the rent passes what the contents are worth, the cheapest move is to keep the few things that matter and let the rest go.

Time inside a unit also wears things down. In a non-climate-controlled unit, summer humidity softens cardboard, puts mildew into upholstery and mattress foam, and starts surface rust on bed frames and tools. We open the boxes with you, tell you plainly what has held up and what has not, and haul off the rest. Our crews cover Duluth and towns like Suwanee, Norcross and Lawrenceville.

What comes with a storage unit cleanout

Sorting alongside you or on your behalf

Point out keepers and throwaways yourself, or hand us a few simple directions and we sort while you take care of other errands. Whatever you keep stays in the unit or gets loaded into your car.

Carrying, loading and hauling off

Every item leaves by hand or on a dolly, goes onto our truck and rides away with us. Nobody asks you to drag a couch down the hallway or fight a sleeper sofa under a roll-up door.

Donation and recycling come first

Furniture and household goods that still have use are pulled aside to donate. Metal, cardboard and electronics go to recyclers that accept them, and only real trash ends up at the landfill.

Big and awkward pieces

We move sleeper sofas, treadmills, old fridges and box springs all the time. When a unit is mostly large items, it is handled just like our furniture removal and appliance removal jobs.

Swept clean at the end

Once the last load is out, we sweep the floor and collect stray tape, staples and packing scraps. Most facilities expect an empty, clean unit before they end the rental.

Signs it is time to empty the unit

You have not opened it in a year
If nothing inside has been needed in twelve months, most of it probably will not be. That year of rent is a clear cost against items you have not missed.
A rent increase notice arrived
Facilities often raise rates on long-term tenants. A new rate is a good moment to compare the yearly cost to what the contents would cost to replace.
Boxes are sagging or smell musty
Crushed bottom boxes and a damp smell point to moisture. Fabric, paper and particleboard furniture absorb it and degrade, so waiting usually leaves less worth keeping.
A move-out or estate deadline
Closing a unit for a relative, or ahead of a relocation, often comes with a date. A crew that can clear it in one visit keeps you from paying for another month.

How the day runs

  1. 1

    Free on-site estimate

Call us and we come look at the unit with you. We check its size, how full it is and what kinds of items are inside, then give you upfront pricing with no hidden fees.

  2. 2

    Arrange facility access

You confirm the gate code and access hours, and let the office know a crew is coming if they require it. Some facilities ask that the renter be present or add us as authorized.

  3. 3

    Sort and load

We pull items out in order, confirm keepers with you, and load the rest. Heavy pieces go first so the truck is balanced and nothing gets crushed.

  4. 4

    Sweep and close out

We sweep the empty unit and walk it with you. You lock up and return the key or lock to the office on your schedule.

What moves the price of a storage unit cleanout

Pricing is mostly about how much of our truck your items fill and how much work it takes to get them there. We look at the unit in person so the number you hear matches the job. No figures are quoted sight unseen.

Volume
A half-full small unit takes far less truck space than a packed unit stacked to the ceiling. Volume is the biggest single driver.
Weight and material
Books, tile, weight sets and solid wood furniture are dense. Heavy loads add to disposal costs even when they take up little room.
Items with disposal fees
Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold refrigerant need special handling at the drop-off point, which adds to the cost of those pieces.
Access inside the facility
An upper-floor unit reached by elevator, or one far down an indoor hallway, means more carrying time than a drive-up door.

Questions about clearing a storage unit

Do I have to be at the facility while you clear the unit?
Usually not. A lot of customers meet us to unlock the unit and show us what to keep, then head out. Each facility sets its own rules, so ask whether the renter must be present or can add us as authorized ahead of time.
Why not just toss things in the facility dumpster?
Most facilities forbid tenants from leaving household goods in their bins and can bill you if they catch it. When we haul the whole load away, that is never an issue.
Are there things you won't haul?
Paint, gasoline, propane tanks, pool chemicals and other hazardous materials stay off our truck. Facilities generally prohibit them in units, but if you come across any, we can explain where they should go.
How quickly can the unit be emptied?
We offer same-day and next-day service when the schedule allows. Mention your move-out date on the call and we will work the visit around it.
Where do the hauled items end up?
Furniture and goods that still work go aside for donation, metal and cardboard head to recycling, and whatever is left is disposed of the proper way. Garage cleanouts and basement cleanouts at your home follow the same approach if you need one of those too.
